Almost all booking errors are preventable with better process and more complete information at the time of booking.
1. Booking without checking breed acceptance
Assuming a breed is accepted because similar breeds have flown before. Breed acceptance policies vary by carrier and change over time.
2. Not accounting for advance booking requirements
Most carriers require AVI bookings confirmed 24 to 72 hours before departure. Last-minute requests outside this window will not be accepted.
3. Booking before documentation is confirmed
If the booking is moved, the health certificate may expire. Most carriers require certificates dated within 10 days of travel.
4. Incorrect weight at booking
The weight declared must match the actual weight at acceptance including the container. Discrepancies at check-in can void the booking.
5. Not checking embargo status
Booking on a route or carrier that is under embargo on the travel date. Particularly relevant for temperature-sensitive routes in summer.
6. Interline assumptions
Assuming animals can connect from one airline to another. Interline arrangements for live animals are not standard. Turkish Cargo, for example, explicitly does not accept interline transfers.
7. Container size not confirmed for the specific carrier
Container requirements vary by carrier. A container meeting IATA LAR minimums may not meet the specific carrier's requirements for certain breeds.
